Welcome to the website of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Madagascar to UNESCO, also known as “REPERMAD UNESCO”.
The REPERMAD UNESCO is the link between the Malagasy government and UNESCO, a United Nations’ agency located in Paris. Our mission is to represent and voice the interests and concerns of Madagascar, to affirm its place in the concert of nations, and to ensure that the country benefits from UNESCO’s expertise, projects, programs and studies in its key priorities areas which include: Education, Science, Culture, Communication and Information.
UNESCO’s 193 Member States constitute a very large international public, where each country like Madagascar, contributes to a mutual fulfillment based on the principles of exchange and dialogue allowing cultural rapprochement while safeguarding cultural and socio-economic diversities and specificities.
Our website seeks to be a real interactive communication tool between all the actors intervening in UNESCO’s and Madagascar’s key priorities areas and we wish it to be accessible, practical, and complete as much as possible.

The REPERMAD UNESCO website is a place for exchange and a link for everyone to take advantage of the numerous opportunities in terms of institutional, scientific and cultural information as well as to contribute to the education for all and the culture of peace.

PRESS RELEASE : UNESCO – Elections 2011: Total success for Madagascar !

Paris, November 5th 2011 – After being elected Vice-President of the 36th General Conference of UNESCO which took place in Paris (France), Madagascar was just elected to four committees and subsidiary organs for which it was candidate. This results from an active campaign led by the Permanent Representation of Madagascar to UNESCO (REPERMAD UNESCO) under the direction and supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, undeniably reinforcing the visibility of Madagascar within the United Nations specialized agency.

On November 4th, the Member States of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization proceeded on the elections of the new members of the fourteen committees, commissions, and other subsidiary organs in charge of managing and implementing the different programs of the Organization in its field of competence as well as the nomination of the External Auditor.

At the end of the 36th General Conference, Madagascar will seat for the first time in the Legal Committee, the Intergovernmental Committee for the International Hydrological Programme (IHP), the Intergovernmental Committee for the Management of Social Transformations (MOST) Programme, the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in case of Illicit Appropriation (PRBC), and this, until 2015.

At 6:00 pm (local time) the President of the Nominations Committee, His Excellency Mr. David Hamaziripi (Zimbabwe) announced the detailed results of the ballots for each committee, commission, and other subsidiary organ, with the presence of Her Excellency Mrs. Katalin Bogyay (Hungary), President of the 36th General Conference, the Ambassadors and Heads of the Delegations of UNESCO’s Member States.

The entrance of Madagascar within these four committees and subsidiary organs make up for the end of its mandate within the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the development of communication (IPDC), and the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee(IGBC).

Nevertheless, Madagascar remains a member of the Intergovernmental Council for the Information for all Programme (IFAP) until 2013 and the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) until 2014.

The General Conference is composed of the representatives of all Member States and associated Members of the Organization. It meets every two years to adopt the Programme and the budget of UNESCO for the next biennium, elects the members of the Executive Board, and nominates every four years the Director General of the Organization.

The 36th session of the General Conference of UNESCO ended on November 10th 2011.

PRESS RELEASE : UNESCO – General Conference: Madagascar elected Vice-President of the 36th session of the General Conference of UNESCO

Paris, October 26th 2011 – The opening ceremony of the 36th session of the General Conference of UNESCO was held last October 25th at the Organization’s Headquarters in Paris (France) with the presence of Mrs. Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO, Mr. Davidson Hepburn, President of the 35th General Conference, Mrs. Eleonora Mitrofanova, President of the Executive Board, and many ministers and heads of delegations of the 193 Member States of the Organization.

The Malagasy delegation was led by Mr. Ny Toky Andriamanjato, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. and Deputy permanent Delegate to UNESCO. About ten Directors general and expert technicians coming from the different ministries and the Malagasy National Commission for UNESCO made the trip from Antananarivo in order to participate to the works of this Governing body. They were also assisted by the advisers of the Permanent Delegation of Madagascar to UNESCO.

The accession of Curacao and Sint Maarteen as the 7th and 8th associated Members, as well as the election of Mrs. Katalin Bogyay, Ambassador of Hungary to UNESCO to the Presidency of the 36th General Conference were highlights of this first day.

Following the recommendations of the Executive Board, Madagascar was also elected as one of the 36 Vice-Presidents of this session of the General Conference.

Many Heads of States and governments were expected to attend this General Conference, notably Mr. Alassane Ouattara, President of the Republic of Ivory Coast, Mr. Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba, President of the Republic of Gabon, Mr. Tillman Thomas, Prime Minister of Grenada and Mr. Raila Odinga, Prime Minister of Kenya. An important number of well-known figures participated to the Leader’s Forum. The theme addressed and discussed during this Forum was: “How does UNESCO contribute to building a culture of peace and to sustainable development?” (October 26 – 27) Her Majesty the Queen Rania of Jordan was expected to participate to this high-level Forum.

During three weeks, the Member States and associated Members of UNESCO debated on numerous issues in relation to the budget 2012-2013 and to the policies and programs of the Organization in its field of competence (education, culture, science and communication). Other delicate issues such as the request for admission by Palestine as a full Member of UNESCO were also dealt with.

The General Conference of UNESCO is composed of the representatives of all the Member States of the Organization. It meets every two years with the participation of Member States and associated Members. The General Conference determines the policies and the main lines of work of UNESCO. It adopts the Programme and the budget of the Organization for the following two years. It elects the members of the Executive Board and nominates every four years the Director General of the Organization. It also elects the members of the different subsidiary organs of UNESCO.

The 36th session of the General Conference ended on November 10th 2011.

PROCLAMATION OF A WORLD RADIO DAY AND AN INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY AT 187th SESSION OF EXECUTIVE BOARD OF UNESCO

Other decisions adopted by the Board include the proclamation of a World Radio Day and an International Jazz Day to be celebrated on 13 February and 30 April respectively.
World Radio day recognizes the critical role of radio in development, through its contribution to media pluralism and democratic governance.
International Jazz Day will provide the opportunity to celebrate jazz as a “unifying force” for the rapprochement of cultures.

COMPETITION SORATONONIN'2011

Since 2002, the association "KOLO" is organizing a competition dictation. The purpose of this competition is to promote the Malagasy language to the Malagasy diaspora and lovers of Madagascar.

The session will be held this year on November 5th 2011 in the school-Ceroi INALCO, 65, rue des Grands Moulins, 75013 PARIS.
