About the field of Natural Science

The Natural Science sector, representing the letter S in UNESCO, contributes to the organizations’ mission of promoting a culture of peace, sustainable development, gender equality and the eradication of extreme poverty. This sector focuses on international programs in the freshwater, marine, ecological, earth and basic sciences.

At the national level, UNESCO’s action is implemented by the National Committees of the International scientific programs including:

- The International Hydrological Program :
a program dedicated to research in the field of water resources management as well as education and capacity building.

- Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) :
works in the field of marine research and observation, risk prevention, the preservation and the protection of marine environments and capacity building in order to better understand and ensure the efficient management of oceans and coastal resources.

- Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB) :
seeks to establish the scientific basis for improving the relation between man and nature at the global level and to reduce environmental impacts (particularly on tropical forests, urban systems, islands, coastal and marine areas). Throughout the world, there are 564 sites of biosphere reserves in 109 countries, recognized by UNESCO’s MAB. Three of these sites are located in the following regions of Madagascar:
North of Mananara recognized in 1990
Sahamalaza-Radama Isle recognized in 2001
Toliara Littoral recognized in 2003

- The International Geosciences Program (IGCP) :
a project focusing on research for a safer environment, climate change and mineral and groundwater resources extraction. This program is a joint initiative of UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).

- International Basic Sciences Program (IBSP) :
the focal point is on projects in the field of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. This is an international and multidisciplinary program created by UNESCO’s member states in order to intensify intergovernmental cooperation as well as cooperation between scientific partners. This program reinforces capacity building in the areas of the physical and biological sciences.
